Is It The Right Time To Get Headshots?

The right answer is yes. The answer is always yes. Now that quarantine regulations are slowly being lifted it may be a good time to get ahead of the curve And get some new headshots especially if you have been furloughed or out of work for the last few months. You may want to rebrand or rejoin the work force. You would certainly need some new shots for yourself and or your LinkedIn page, social channels, or applications. We have been put in an unfortunate situation with millions of people being impacted on a daily basis. Not only do we have to think of our own well being; we must think of others during his time as well. When you book a shoot at my studio I have current Covid protocols in place meaning a temperature check at the door, a clean shooting environment (regularly disinfected plus air purifier) and hand sanitizer available upon request. I also wear a mask during the shoot. Between March and September my studio was closed. I was only taking outdoor portrait gigs. Now that I am back in studio I want to ensure that your portraits are done right.

Headshots are an extremely important part of getting your presence out there. Folks like to see who they are working with, working for, and hiring. A client recently shared a story about how she was hiring for a new position at her firm and it came down to two candidates. Both were extremely qualified and their resumes were for the most part equal. My client wanted to find out MORE about who she could potentially hire so she found her prospective new hires’ LinkedIn pages. One of the prospects had a professional headshot for her photo. She looked put together, professional, and ready to engage. The second prospect had a photo of her at an outdoor party wearing a tank top and holding a drink. Not only wasn’t the photo professional; it didn’t send the right message to the person who was now looking at her resume. After I asked my client what she did after she saw the photos she turned to me and calmly said “Oh, I threw her resume out. That’s a great photo for instagram but she’s not for us.” And just like that POOF. If she had a professional headshot she may have gotten the job. You may not think you need a new headshots but you do. Comparatively it’s a small investment in yourself for what could be a career with plenty of upward mobility. When you get to a certain point in that career your office would pay for your new headshots and not you. You’re moving up in the world.

A few things go into getting your headshots done. I always recommend that my clients bring a couple of outfit changes. Usually two to three with accessory combinations work wonders for someone’s photo shoot. We are creatures of comfort and with that being said I always suggest bringing something that looks great and feels great. It makes a world of difference to a photo. I recently had a client who came to my studio decked out in a freshly pressed suit. He looks fantastic but he was completely uncomfortable, which never makes for a good headshot. I made the suggestion of ditching the jacket and it was like a switch was flipped. His photos came out even better because he was comfortable in his button down without jacket. Again; we are creatures of comfort and part of my job is to make you as comfortable as possible when it’s time for your headshots.

Fitness Photography

I love taking fitness photos. Why? Because it shows how much hard work and dedication someone can put into themselves to get the most out of a new lifestyle or change. It’s inspiring to see my clients make huge life changes and want to document those changes for the world to see. I have shot personal trainers, models, actors, MMA fighters, boxers, and everyone in between. Wake up and get your fitness photography NYC! I cater to anyone who wants some high quality photos of the body that they are proud of. Nothing shows the world you’re ready or how committed you are to bettering yourself than images showcasing the physical and mental changes you have made. When you have your health you have the world at your fingertips. Small changes lead to big changes until you find that you’re the person you have always wanted to be. Fitness is a choice we all have and if you put your mind to it you can achieve great things and feel a million times better than you did when you started your uphill journey to being in command of your health.  Personally, it’s a journey that took me 33 years to start and I’m not looking back any time soon. In encourage everyone to quit smoking, hard boozing (regular boozing is ok in moderation), and eating things that will slowly kill you. Start running, swimming, biking, and eating better. You’ll live longer and love how you feel.  When you’re ready for some fitness photography NYC you know where to find me!

Fitness Photography NYC

fitness photography, fitness photography nyc, nyc fitness photography,

Fitness Photography NYC is fantastic. I love shooting fitness; especially in the city I grew up in. I’m always extremely impressed by the fitness models and people I meet while doing these photography gigs. As you can see from the above gallery I have shot a variety of models for a variety of reasons. I’m fascinated by people who are extremely fit but do it in different ways. Each person is different and the way they achieve their personal well-being is awesome to behold and can be extremely eye-opening as well. It personally helps me with my fitness goals and all the Fitness Photography NYC I do is actually personally inspiring by meeting these different people. In 2013 I quit smoking after 10 years and took up running as well as a healthier lifestyle overall. I’m not anywhere near my goal but I will be.

It’s different strokes for different folks. You have to find out what works for you. One of the best things about living in NYC is that people are always working out, running, swimming, doing yoga, outwardly eating right, and creating positivity in the universe, which is a great feeling to fall into and get absorbed in. There is so much out there that is designed to hurt your body and it’s our responsibility as human beings to separate the bad from the good and use good habits in our day-to-day life. I will keep taking fitness photos and I hope at least a couple of you out there can look at those photos as say “Fuck, it. I’m going to get my ass off the couch and get in shape.” or at least put down the soda you’re drinking right now and jog into a better tomorrow.

Check back for more Fitness Photography NYC as I would love to make it a regular thing.

Above and Beyond

We have all heard the phrase “Going above and beyond,” but what does it really mean? What does it mean to us photographers?

Let’s break it down. When someone says; “That person really went above and beyond” in reference to an act that was performed that generally means that the person in question took it upon themselves to perform in a manner that exceeded expectations. That also means that they exceeded expectations without asking for more compensation without an added bad attitude. Basic translation “I don’t need to do this for you but I’m going to do it anyway.” Why? Common courtesy? Compassion? You really like the person? Respect? All of the above? Yes.

This applies a lot to the service industry. However, photographers are part of the service industry as well. We take the shots people want to pay for to have for whatever reason it may be. Whether it’s to document an event, capture a location, surprise a lover, for self promotion, for  business promotion, or to make someone feel better about themselves. We serve people with our skills. Now, when a client is amazing they will get the best part of our service. We will go that extra step to make sure that they are happy. If there is someone I like I tend to overshoot a tad and maybe offer them a few more retouched images as well as some more artistic shots other than the ones they specifically asked for. More often than not conversations come up about the photography business, small business, modeling opportunities, or what have you. I personally will take the time out of our session at no extra charge to walk a client through any question, fear, or anxiety they may have with whatever regard they are wondering about. You’d be surprised at how many photographers don’t do that. You’d also be surprised how many photographers don’t do that in NYC, which is a city filled with photographers!

I pride myself on a job well done. We all should. The reason we give these little nuggets of extras out is because we care and that we also know we will make the money back on referrals and get great testimonials out of the deal. However, going above and beyond can also lead to a client being married to you or attached at the hip and we try to avoid that as much as possible. This is the grey area that occasionally arises. In the past I have gone above and beyond for a few higher strung clients and it backfires in the respect that they nitpick because they feel like they can or they call you at inappropriate times for whatever reason. It doesn’t mean you should stop being nice. It just means that you have to be more firm. I recently got married and my wedding photographers went above and beyond. I can honestly say that being on the other side of the lens for once was surreal but they were so great that it didn’t matter and they became friends because we all got along, which is why we hired them in the first place. They catered to our needs and delivered amazing engagement photos (still waiting on the wedding snaps) with such a great attitude that it was inspiring. They gave themselves to their art and that can sometimes be hard to find. If you are reading this and want to know who they are then by all means send me a direct message through whatever outlet you see this blog post in.

Clients also go above and beyond for their photographers. Living in NYC my whole life we know that you pretty much tip for everything. I have overshot and stayed longer than I should have on some shoot and without asking a client would usually throw a compliment my way and give me a “Here you go, kid. This is for you.” Sometimes we live for those sentiments. I am in no way trying to show off because that happens in a one out of twenty situation. I just wanted to show that it goes both ways. The client/photographer relationship can be very symbiotic and you want to ideally avoid it being stand offish. We’ve all been there. Sometimes people just don’t like having their picture taken and it’s our job to go above and beyond to calm that person down and make them forget that you are there to steal their soul with your camera.

As people we should always go above and beyond. As business people we should strive to exceed expectations but not at the cost of our integrity or wallet. There is a balance out there and we can all do well to find it. Sometimes you wake up and just want to crawl back into bed, but you can’t. You won’t. It’s not in you because you know that you have to get out there and shoot. You don’t know what situation you are going to walk into once that camera is around your neck. All you should know is that you are going to do the best job you can and if the situation calls for it you will go above and beyond to put that smile on someone’s face!

As always help support this blog with your comments, likes, retweets, or whatever you crazy kids do. Also, go above and beyond for someone you love this Holiday Season with a gift card from Amazon!
