2020 Here We Go!

Better late than never. That’s how I feel about this blog post. It’s January 8th, 2020. Usually, I write these “start of year ” things a little sooner but hey, better late than never. The word “never” has such crushing finality to it, don’t you think? The connotation puts a finite bookend on whatever statement you’re making or some perceived rigidity in your life. On the other hand, it could also mean sticking to your guns. Never is a strong word. But In terms of goals or work, the word NEVER shouldn’t apply. It shouldn’t be taken as an ill omen, point of contention, or a finite bookend. The word “never “shouldn’t be spoken aloud to deride one’s progress or self-worth. Us freelancers ofttimes work doubly or triply (quadruply? just drooply?) hard to establish ourselves as a commodity, have financial stability (Mental stability too!) and reap what we sow. Freelancers cannot be lazy. We all have to strive toward seemingly impossible goals then move onto the next one. It took me years to establish a sustainable photography business. There are of course many ups and downs and truly when you’re a freelancer the term “feast or famine” most certainly applies. We go from the highest of highs to sometimes the lowest of lows but we chose this for ourself and I don’t know if I could live any other way. The thought of sitting in an office and being a drone for someone else drives me absolutely batty. That is something I may NEVER do again.

This is a big year for me. It marks seven years being a full-time freelancer. I’m closer to the ten-year mark than I ever thought I would be. When I first started I gave myself two years. If I didn’t find a modicum of success I would have gotten a job with Con-ed and let the overtime kill me and may have willingly stagnated my creativity. I’m glad this has worked out so far. I can also be very stubborn and a bit delusional and that helps with being a freelancer. Staying fresh also helps. I’m a big fan of removing old work and replacing those photos with new and better work. It shows a nice progression from where you started to where you are now. As a freelancer, we have to be better, right? Instead of just dreaming about the things we want we need to put the work in and go out there to get them. We have the power because we aren’t shackled to a desk most of the day. The downside is that because as freelancers we make our own schedule and sometimes have a little too much fun or downtime when we really should be concentrating on something else. Freelancers love the smell of their own farts. It’s true. I’m guilty. You’re guilty. It comes with the territory. We perpetually want to be the most interesting person in the world. We’re not. We’re just doing our own thing and it works for us. The reality is that freelancers struggle as much as everyone else. We’re all in this together. That being said there is no stopping you from achieving what you want. Most barriers are constructs we place ahead of ourselves that we think we’ll NEVER get over. It’s a matter of perception. Change your own mind to suit your needs. In many cases, we end up being slaves to our minds for bad or worse. Don’t let the cold clammy claws of anxiety or depression keep you from your goals. Don’t let them put the NEVER in your mind. Rise above it. You’re who you are and doing what you’re doing for a reason. Instead of a negative; turn that NEVER into a positive. I’m NEVER gonna stop. I’m NEVER giving up. I will NEVER yield. Throw what you want at me because I will NEVER stop moving forward. Is that all you got? Because it will NEVER be enough.  The ground will crack and tremble with every step I take because I will NEVER be able to stop reaching for my goals and when I get there I will NEVER look back and think of the bad days;  only the days that gave me the motivation to surpass my wildest dreams.

Your Lifestyle Photos

Clients often ask me what my most popular package is. My answer is always the same; one hour of walk around shooting time with up to three outfit changes, all images delivered the same day and retouches of up to 15 shots within 48 hours. I charge $300 flat for this package. More often than not I’ll hear an “I’ll take it!” Well, figuratively I’ll hear it. It’s usually over email or text or in some cases through the all-powerful “DM” (which in this case doesn’t stand for Dungeon Master for my D&D peeps) On occasion I’m met with some resistance and depending on the situation I’ll explain to a potential client that they are investing in themselves with my photography.

How does that translate? Let’s say we walk around for an hour and I take over a hundred shots. I may edit a certain number for a client BUT they get all images to do with as they please. There is an evergreen quality to a shoot like this because someone could take their shots and regularly post them and still have more in the catalog. Many of my clients do this. I’ll get on Instagram and see something I shot years ago and think “how cool is that?” We live in a very connected age so if you’re a blogger, journalist, influencer, style icon, writer, actor, model, or what have you; these shots will be beneficial to your career. Why not hire a pro to capture you at your best instead of taking those selfies or forcing your friends to capture your best side on your cell phone? They tell you they don’t mind, but they’re lying!

Besides branding and self-promotion lifestyle photos are a fun way to show people your personality or even get out of your shell and do something cool! Some of my clients want lifestyle photos just for themselves and that’s perfectly fine! Why not treat yourself with a little bit of vanity? There is nothing wrong with that. Getting your picture taken is a very personal experience that most people aren’t a big fan of. However, it works both ways. If you love the camera we’ll have a great shoot. If you hate the camera we’ll still have a great shoot because when working together we can bring out that dynamite personality. Also, side note: Lifestyle shots are great for dating apps. I’ve had nothing but positive feedback when folks use our shots online!

Another great thing about lifestyle photos is that not only can we shoot them anywhere, but you’ll have something to look at a few years down the line. You’re investing in visual memories of yourself, which can really be said about any photo shoot. Lifestyle shoots are fun and being in NYC there are plenty of amazing places to shoot. Doing this for so long I have a few tricks up my sleeve! I would also suggest really going for it when we shoot. You can always buy some fun clothes and return them after the shoot (Happens a lot!) I’m readily available in the NYC area with usually a week’s notice. sunglasses, lifestyle, product photographer, product photography, jadeblackco, lifestyle photography

Good Product Photography Sells Your Items!

That’s a simple and straight forward fact. If you have a brand with an online presence regardless if its an Amazon store, Etsy store, Big Cartel Store, your own website or even Instagram; you’re going to need some stellar product photos. Some people decide to take the photos themselves with their phones, which I think is a big NO NO because it affects sales almost directly. I can’t even tell you how many times clients call me and say “Hey, I took photos with my phone and I’m not selling anything…can you help me?” and of course I say “No, beat it! I’m not running a charity!” That would make for a short blog post, right? NO! I walk them through my process to take great product photos and make sure that I have their needs in mind. I offer full-blown Amazon product photo packages including shots on white, lifestyle photos, and even video. All of these are important to have because your potential customers want to know exactly what they are getting and a pretty picture sells them on your item. Perception is  99% of reality right? (I may be off on that but for all intents and purposes that’s the percentage I’m sticking with!)

Just think about the amount of stuff there is out there. We buy stuff all the time. That stuff also sells itself with photos. When you go to Amazon you’re more attracted to items that have better photos and better reviews. You feel confident in your purchase and are able to look at what you just bought and say to yourself “Wow I just got that!” We are more attracted to something elegant and high end looking even though we know that sometimes when we open the package we get the reality of a product, which is ok because you bought it for a reason, right? As a seller you want your photos to look as elegant and glamorous as possible. Investing in good product photography is just one step of the ecomm puzzle. I have seen many clients’ sales sky rocket through some great photos that I’ve provided. Regardless of the item you are wanting to sell a good photo helps especially if you’re selling something as mundane as extension cords. I can shoot the heck out of an extension cord lemme tell ya. Personally, my favorite ecomm items to shoot are electronics because they lend themselves to lots of creativity.

If you’re going to book a product shoot I suggest having samples in mind of shots that you absolutely love as well as a budget. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a delivery date in mind too! I enjoy feeding off clients ideas and delivering unique photos that display their product to the fullest. Here’s an example of a shoot done earlier in the year for a felt sign. inspirational quotes, inspiration, product photography, product photographer, excellent product photograhy, still life, still life photography, advertising photographer, amazon photos, amazon photographer,

Compared to other sellers on Amazon I delivered a better product for my client who loved the gallery I sent her way. Crisp and clean photos are also a selling point for your items plus making sure the item has no imperfections during an edit.  Here are also some Product Photography tips on how you can do this on your own! I offer excellent rates and a quick turnaround time on edits! You can check out my work and contact info at nyphotony.com/product-shots
