One of my favorite songs is called “Find a Way or Make One” by Swedish metal band “Amon Amarth” (You can check it out here). Their brand of metal has been wildly inspiring to me for many, many years. I always try to catch them when they tour, and it’s always a fun and positive time. But, wait, Rich, aren’t you one of the best photographers in New York? Why are you talking about metal?
I’ll tell you why. Because I fuckin love metal. BUT also because that song in particular inspires me when times are tough. Yes. I bet you didn’t know that full-time freelancing can be a bit rough (I’m being very sarcastic here). I love being a full-time freelancer. I’ve been doing it for almost 13 years. Some years are amazing, some years not so much – but still great in certain ways. I get to make my own schedule and have experiences I would not normally get to have. My eyes are always open, and I try to be as present as possible with every shoot I do. BUT sometimes when things are slow, I tend to get trapped in melancholy. I feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. NOW it took a long time to separate that feeling from my own sense of self worth (I’ll get into that another time), but it can feel like “Woe is me…I’ll never get another booking again!” I’m sure you’ve been there. Usually when those feelings happen, I explore them and try to do something productie work wise. Maybe I’ll put a new page on my site, make some extra social media posts, or even…write a blog post. All these things are cathartic. This brings me back to that song I started this post with. I will crank the shit out of that song a few times. Today I blasted it on my morning run and then again in the shower. Lyrically, they speak to me in many ways, but I always think about the lyrics in terms of my personality, attitude, and of course, my business. Check them out!
“All alone on these fields of war
I stand against a mighty foe
I can’t go back, push on, I’ve come this far
I’ll win this fight, of that I’m sure
Stand tall (stand tall)
And fight (and fight)
The world will quake
Stand tall (stand tall)
And fight (and fight)
I will never break
When it seems, hope is lost
Fight them at all cost
When it seems, all hope is gone
I will find a
I will find a way
I brace myself against the coming storm
Lift my head and stand my ground
I hear it soar, out loud, my battle roar
I’ll never let myself be bound
Stand tall (stand tall)
And fight (and fight)
The ground will shake
Stand tall (stand tall)
And fight (and fight)
I will never break
When it seems, hope is lost
Fight them at all cost
When it seems, all hope is gone
I will find a
I will find a way
No matter what the odds, I will never kneel
I trust in ancient Gods and my heart of steel
So, send your best with wrath; you cannot block my path
Though your arrows block the sun, I’ll find a way or make one
Stand tall (stand tall)
And fight (and fight)
The world will quake
Stand tall (stand tall)
And fight (and fight)
I will never break
When it seems, hope is lost
Fight them at all cost
When it seems all hope is gone
I will find a
I will find a
When it seems, hope is lost
Fight them all at any cost
When it seems (when it seems)
Hope is gone (hope is gone)
I’ll find a way, or I will make one”
Pretty rad if you ask me. the song makes me hunker down and try and think of every single way I can improve how I am handling my work and whatever current situation I may be in as far as booking gigs are concerned. The gigs will come. They always do. If you’re a full-time freelancer reading this, I hope you get some inspiration from the Swedes known as Amon Amarth.
What does “Find a Way or Make One” mean? It means just that. You are capable, you are strong, you are determined. Press on and do not let anything stop you under any circumstances. Ye,s it takes being a tad delulu, but that’s what makes us a different breed of cat. You can handle anything thrown your way and give it back a thousandfold. The song also reminds me of the best advice I’ve ever gotten, which was “Make it happen.”
Anyway, enough rambling. I hope everyone out there had a great start to 2026 and I wish you all nothing but success and finding a way or making one!
