Every year I write a blog post about how booking a headshot session will help your brand. Guess what? I’m sticking to my guns here; much like how you should be booking new headshots every six to nine months and sticking to those guns. I’ve been at this full-time for almost eleven years (March 1st is my eleven-year anniversary of being a full-time photographer, how insane is that!?) and I’m still flabergasted by folks who think they can use a twenty-year-old picture and come across as themselves. Think about how many changes you go through in a year or less. You might get several new hairstyles, haircuts, new wrinkles, less wrinkles, gained weight, lost weight, fixed teeth, or even gained a new sense of style. I firmly believe that if you’re in the workforce, have a brand, or are and actor/model you need updated photos of yourself to present your potential clients with.
Your potential clients could be the firm you’re applying to, a modeling gig, a residency program at a hospital, or any place of business that wouldn’t mind seeing that sweet face of yours. You must look your best and present yourself in the best way possible because you “want the job.” HR folks always tell me how a great photo can be the biggest difference between equally skilled candidates getting the same job. Comparatively, who would you rather hire? The person who posts a cropped photo of themselves at a wedding OR the person who has a professional headshot that they took the effort to book themselves in hopes that they completed the package of their resume? I think we would all go with the person who took that little extra effort to look that much more put together. It’s my job to make you look as good as possible. I always do a mini interview whenever clients book a shoot just by asking “What are these headshots for?” It allows my clients to elaborate, show me samples, and then we nail it. I cater to each of my clients needs as far as photos go. I offer corporate headshots as well as headshots for actors/models and lifestyle headshots – which truth be told are my favorite to shoot especially if that means walking around NYC while we do them.
What sets me apart from other photographers? I’ve been in business a lot longer than most and have been extremely reliable in these unreliable times. If you’re an actor, performer, model, business person, or entrepreneur then you need professional photos to get yourself noticed. A great photo shows that you are serious about your brand. Once you schedule your appointment I suggest you bring two to three outfit combinations for the session. Generally, my headshot sessions last less than an hour. I also tether my camera to my computer so you can see the shots as they are taken! All images would be delivered at full res the same day via Dropbox. Well, does it!?
In short; yes. It matters a lot. I’m not just saying that because I take headshots for people who need them FOR LinkedIN. I’m saying it because it’s true. If you want a recruiter to hire you, talk to you, or even get to know what you’re all about you definitely need a great photo to accompany your otherwise stellar body of work. I have heard from many HR folks who have hired me to update their staff photos that it’s always been an issue.
“He’s been using the same picture since 1998”
“She used a photo from her wedding”
“They took a selfie and posted it on their page”
Those are just some of the things I’ve heard over the course of my eight-year career shooting people. I have also shot headshots for recruiters and I kid you not – more often than not they will admit to passing over someone just because of the photo they chose for their LinkedIn headshot.
“I’d hire her but the picture of her on the mechanical bull is too much, who does that?”
“He seems great but we have another guy with the same skill set that didn’t use a picture of them golfing.”
“He’s holding his kitten in the photo…”
Again these are things I have legitimately heard while taking headshots for clients. You may not think so but your LinkedIN Headshot photo matters big time. It’s not a representation of who you are but it also lets potential recruiters and companies know that you take yourself seriously enough to schedule a proper photoshoot, for lack of a better word; a classy photo. I have had clients message me not too long after photoshoots with great news of how our photos helped them land the job and that they’ll be back in a few months. That’s another thing! Ideally, you should be getting new photos every six months or so or every two years when you get promoted or make another career decision.
Believe me, as a photographer I know how much people hate to have their pictures taken for work. It’s just part of working life now. We are so connected on every level digitally why wouldn’t you want to have an elegant photo of yourself that enhances your professional presence online?

The right answer is yes. The answer is always yes. Now that quarantine regulations are slowly being lifted it may be a good time to get ahead of the curve And get some new headshots especially if you have been furloughed or out of work for the last few months. You may want to rebrand or rejoin the work force. You would certainly need some new shots for yourself and or your LinkedIn page, social channels, or applications. We have been put in an unfortunate situation with millions of people being impacted on a daily basis. Not only do we have to think of our own well being; we must think of others during his time as well. When you book a shoot at my studio I have current Covid protocols in place meaning a temperature check at the door, a clean shooting environment (regularly disinfected plus air purifier) and hand sanitizer available upon request. I also wear a mask during the shoot. Between March and September my studio was closed. I was only taking outdoor portrait gigs. Now that I am back in studio I want to ensure that your portraits are done right.
Headshots are an extremely important part of getting your presence out there. Folks like to see who they are working with, working for, and hiring. A client recently shared a story about how she was hiring for a new position at her firm and it came down to two candidates. Both were extremely qualified and their resumes were for the most part equal. My client wanted to find out MORE about who she could potentially hire so she found her prospective new hires’ LinkedIn pages. One of the prospects had a professional headshot for her photo. She looked put together, professional, and ready to engage. The second prospect had a photo of her at an outdoor party wearing a tank top and holding a drink. Not only wasn’t the photo professional; it didn’t send the right message to the person who was now looking at her resume. After I asked my client what she did after she saw the photos she turned to me and calmly said “Oh, I threw her resume out. That’s a great photo for instagram but she’s not for us.” And just like that POOF. If she had a professional headshot she may have gotten the job. You may not think you need a new headshots but you do. Comparatively it’s a small investment in yourself for what could be a career with plenty of upward mobility. When you get to a certain point in that career your office would pay for your new headshots and not you. You’re moving up in the world.
A few things go into getting your headshots done. I always recommend that my clients bring a couple of outfit changes. Usually two to three with accessory combinations work wonders for someone’s photo shoot. We are creatures of comfort and with that being said I always suggest bringing something that looks great and feels great. It makes a world of difference to a photo. I recently had a client who came to my studio decked out in a freshly pressed suit. He looks fantastic but he was completely uncomfortable, which never makes for a good headshot. I made the suggestion of ditching the jacket and it was like a switch was flipped. His photos came out even better because he was comfortable in his button down without jacket. Again; we are creatures of comfort and part of my job is to make you as comfortable as possible when it’s time for your headshots.
